Spring Cycle 2015 Signage Crew

Dates: 15 – 17 October 2015 – 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm

Location: various locations (see events on the left hand side)

Volunteer Role

In the week leading up to this massive event we need to put up more than one thousand signs along the route. For this task we could use all the help we can get!

A core aim of Bicycle NSW and it’s affiliated Bicycle User Groups is to get as many people riding bicycles as possible. Putting up signs for Spring Cycle helps fix two key inhibitors of cycling: wayfinding and safety. Firstly, we’re showing people where to ride and secondly, by letting other road users know that there are cyclists about we’re creating a safe environment for them to ride in.

The process of putting up signs along a route is by far the most important element for a successful Spring Cycle. Sure, the start and finish sites are great, but people participate in the event to enjoy the ride, and that’s why putting up signs is so important – and why we are searching high and low for a great team of volunteers for the signage crew.

As a thank you for helping out with the signage we’ll give you a free entry into Spring Cycle (so you can also ride on the day and annoy your friends by saying “Hey, see that sign? I put it up!”).

All you need to do is make yourself available for a few hours on either 15th, 16th or 17th October, either with your bike or as a driver of the van (provided). We’ll provide instructions and support. We’ll get all the signs and tools organised for you.

Each team will consist of 4 volunteers:

  • 2 volunteers on their bikes (ideally with a trailer. Trailer can be provided)
  • 2 volunteers in a van (at least one must be able to drive)
The van will be provided and will transport signs so that you do not have to cycle the entire distance with a full load.

We’ll be using two bicycle cargo trailers we have here at Bicycle NSW to transport signs while riding. However, if you have a trailer at home that can be used or are willing to let us borrow yours, please let us know!
This is a role for someone who has a keen interest in event logistics and the event industry.

You will work in pairs to install the signage for the one specific part of the Spring Cycle ride. For this role you need to have your full Australian Drivers License and be prepared for a busy day with lifting to install the signage. It is a physically demanding role.
It is a very rewarding volunteer role as you can certainly see that your contribution has a huge impact on the riders and the event.

In this role you will need to attend one training session with the Route Manager prior to the event so that you can become very familiar with the route itself and know exactly where the signs are installed.
Please consider carefully before signing up for this role as we are very much relying on you to be there and complete the role efficiently in order for the event to run smoothly.
